Madagascar hissing cockroaches are a wingless species of insect native only to the island of Madagascar, and are famous for their loud hissing defensive sounds. These are sold in adult pairs with one male and one female. 
They thrive in a 5 to 10-gallon glass aquarium with a secure, escape-proof lid. Maintain temperatures between 75-85°F and 60-70% humidity. Line the bottom with 2 inches of sphagnum peat moss or plain garden soil with no fertilizer or additives and provide hiding spots using cork bark or egg crate flats.
If your home is cooler, use a low-wattage reptile heat mat applied to one side of the tank (creating a temperature gradient) with a thermostat to prevent overheating.
They are herbivores and appreciate fresh, pesticide-free dark leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables such as kale, collard greens, carrots, zucchini, squash, sweet potato, apples, bananas, etc. Supplement their diet with high-quality, dry dog or cat kibble or chicken layer pellets to ensure they get enough protein. They also get most of their hydration directly from fresh veggies and fruits.
Note: Madagascar hissing cockroaches often host beneficial, symbiotic mites (Androlaelaps schaeferi). These mites feed on organic debris and saliva, keeping the roach clean and preventing mold growth. They are harmless to humans. If mite populations grow excessively, you can manage them by brushing them off or carefully shaking the roaches.
